A second mountain and the other lakes

Summer in Whistler is not the winter day with the snow edited out. The winter guide tells you to skip the lakes and the Valley Trail, because those are closed or pointless in the cold season. In summer they are the trip. A sightseeing ride up the mountain is the other trip. One gondola and one lake and a bike-park afternoon do not fit together, and the drive back to Vancouver still has to happen.

In short: Pick Lost Lake or a lift day. Use the day lots off Blackcomb Way. Leave the second mountain, and the other lakes, for another visit.

Lost Lake, and the parking rule that surprises people

Lost Lake Park is a Resort Municipality of Whistler park at 4700 Lost Lake Road. In summer the municipality says you can swim, walk, hike, and bike there from April into mid-December. The beach, picnic tables, washrooms, and a kids' area are the simple version of the visit. Trails in the park run from easy double-track to harder singletrack. A summer day from Vancouver is the beach and a short walk, not the whole trail network.

The parking rule is the part people miss. The municipality says the Lost Lake parking lot is closed to leaving a car from May 15 to September 15. In those months the area is pick-up and drop-off only. Vehicles cannot be left unattended. The lot is also closed in winter, roughly November 15 to April 15, while the nordic trails operate, and that window depends on the weather. The summer instruction is to use the day lots off Blackcomb Way, then the Valley Trail or the summer shuttle.

The trails page puts the main entry near the corner of Blackcomb Way and Lorimer Road. Day Lot 5 is the lot it names for that entry. When the lakeside lot is in its closed season, that village-side parking is the plan, not a creative park on Lost Lake Road.

The Valley Trail, or the lift

The Valley Trail is the paved path. The municipality points bike riders at it as the way to Lost Lake from the village. You can also walk it. Rental shops in the village cover people who did not bring a bike. A bike is optional. The beach does not require one.

A lift day is the other choice. Whistler Blackcomb sells summer sightseeing on the mountains, and the village gondola is the straightforward one. The Peak 2 Peak ride and a second mountain are how a "quick gondola" becomes the entire day. Read the resort's summer page before you assume one ticket covers both mountains, the bike park, and a lake swim. This guide's rule is one lift, or the lake. Not both.

Rainbow Park and Lakeside Park, both on Alta Lake, show up on the resort's lake list. They are real beaches. They are also how a Lost Lake plan falls apart. If Lost Lake is the choice, leave Alta Lake alone. If Alta Lake is the choice, skip Lost Lake. Do not try to connect them with a Valley Trail tour and still ride a gondola.

Parking, the shuttle, and the drive

Day lots 1 to 5 sit off Blackcomb Way, close to the Village Stroll and the Valley Trail. The municipality says year-round pay parking is in effect in those lots. The rate table is on the civic parking page. This guide does not copy the dollars or the clock window. Winter overnight rules for those lots are already on the winter page. Summer day visitors should still read the current table, because a posted rate and a full lot are both common on a sunny weekend.

The municipality runs a summer shuttle that stops between the Gondola Transit Exchange and Lost Lake, and it says the shuttle is designed to be wheelchair accessible. Frequency and the daily span are on that page. They change. Use the shuttle when the lake lot is closed and the walk from Day Lot 5 is more than the group wants.

The road from Vancouver is still Highway 99. The Vancouver day-trip guide is the corridor overview. This page does not print a drive time. Check DriveBC, and keep the Whistler activity small enough that the return is boring. A complicated afternoon in the village is how people meet highway traffic in the dark.

Families and access

Lost Lake is the family version of summer Whistler. The beach and the kids' area do the work. The harder singletrack in the park is a different sport. The Valley Trail is the kinder bike ride.

The shuttle's access note matters if someone cannot walk from Blackcomb Way. It does not turn every trail into a paved path. The beach approach is the realistic one with a stroller. A summit trail after a gondola ride is not.

The bike park is a third kind of day, with its own ticket and its own risk. It does not belong beside a first visit to the lake with children.

Season

April to mid-December is the municipality's window for swimming, walking, hiking, and biking at Lost Lake. The May 15 to September 15 parking closure sits inside that window, which is exactly when most people want the beach. Plan on the day lots in that stretch. Fall colour at the lake is still the park, with fewer people than a July Saturday, and the parking rule may already have lifted. Confirm the dates on the park page. They are civic rules, and they move at the edges.

Winter is the other guide. Do not use this page to plan a November weekend. The lake lot, the nordic pass, and the snow are a different set of decisions.

The order that works

Park in a day lot off Blackcomb Way. Walk or ride the Valley Trail, or take the summer shuttle, to Lost Lake. Swim or sit. Come back the same way. Skip the gondola.

Or ride one lift from the village, look at the valley, and come down. Skip the lake.

Either version leaves you a return on Highway 99 that is still a return, not a rescue. The village flower beds and the stroll are a bonus on the way to the car. They are not a third attraction to schedule.

Questions travellers ask

Should I pick Lost Lake or a gondola?
One of them. Lost Lake plus the Valley Trail is the lake day. A lift is the other day. The bike park is a third day.
Can I park at Lost Lake in summer?
From May 15 to September 15 the municipality closes that lot to leaving a car. It is pick-up and drop-off only. Use the day lots off Blackcomb Way, then the Valley Trail or the summer shuttle.
Where are the day lots?
Day Lots 1 to 5 and the Oversized Lot are the year-round pay lots off Blackcomb Way. The municipality parking page has the current rules. This page does not copy the rates.
Is the shuttle usable with a wheelchair?
The municipality says the Lost Lake shuttle is designed to be wheelchair accessible. The beach approach is the realistic stroll. A summit trail is not.
What do I skip?
The second mountain, and Rainbow Park or Lakeside Park if Lost Lake is the pick. The winter guide is the page that leaves the lake off on purpose.
