Prince Edward County from Toronto: A Practical Day Trip

Sandbanks is the day that fits, and it needs a car and a vehicle permit. The 2026 beach season on Ontario Parks runs through 26 October.

Prince Edward County sits on the east shore of Lake Ontario, roughly halfway between Toronto and Ottawa. Local pages call it the County or PEC. It is not Prince Edward Island. Destination Ontario describes a car as the easy way in. The day that fits is Sandbanks Provincial Park, at 3004 County Road 12 in Picton, with a vehicle permit already booked. Picton, Wellington, and a string of wineries are a second day, not this one.

The park and the permit

Ontario Parks lists the 2026 day-use and camping season as 24 April to 26 October. Roofed accommodation on the same page is marked as available in winter, which is a different booking from a beach day. If your date is after 26 October 2026, treat the beach season as closed until the park page publishes the next dates.

Ontario Parks describes three sandy beaches and singles out Outlet Beach for shallow water and a gentle drop-off, which is the swim it points families toward. The photograph on this guide is Lakeshore Beach. The Visit the County park listing also names Dunes Beach, a short walk from Maple Rest, one of the two roofed houses. Those are separate spots inside one park.

Every vehicle entering for the day needs a daily vehicle permit. The Visit the County listing says that includes cars, boats, and motorcycles, and that the permit can be reserved up to five days ahead on the Ontario Parks reservation site or at 1-888-668-7275. Capacity limits apply. Book on the reservation site and read the park page the morning you go. The permit price is on the reservation site. This guide does not copy it.

Hours are a live conflict. On 21 October 2026 the Ontario Parks facility-hours table for Sandbanks was empty, while the Visit the County listing printed a daily window. Use the park page, not a copied clock time.

Camping is real, and it is not this day trip. Ontario Parks lists 616 campsites, 612 of them car camping. Visit the County names six areas: Outlet River A and B, Cedars, Richardson's, Woodlands, and West Lake. A campsite is a separate reservation from the day-use permit. The two roofed houses, Jacques Cottage and Maple Rest, are a third product, and the tourism listing says both can be booked year-round. Do not arrive expecting a tent site because you hold a day-use permit.

The drive, the train, and the bus

There is no train to the gate on County Road 12. Destination Ontario says the county is most easily explored by car, and that driving tours, bike tours, and public transit from Belleville are the other ways in. Visit the County's getting-here page names two western road entries without this guide repeating a drive time: Highway 401 to Wooler Road, which is County Road 40, then south onto Loyalist Parkway, Highway 33, through Carrying Place; or Highway 62 straight south from Belleville. Check the route that morning.

The same page warns of bridge work. County Road 18, used toward campgrounds near Sandbanks, was listed with one lane open and work expected from May through October 2026. County Road 49 was also under rehabilitation, with one lane and short delays. Both notes can change. Read them on the day you travel.

A train still helps only as far as Belleville. Visit the County says take VIA Rail to Belleville, then a taxi, a rental, or a rideshare. County Transit can be called ahead for weekday connections between the VIA station and Picton or Bloomfield. That transit still does not finish at the park gate. The county describes County Transit as weekday service among Belleville, Bloomfield, and Picton, plus a summer weekend connector in season. The local page is the county transit service.

A seasonal FlixBus from Toronto is listed on the getting-here page from 8 June to 13 September 2026, Thursday through Monday, with stops in Wellington, Bloomfield, and at 106 Picton Main Street. That window is over for 2026. Do not plan a fall or winter day around it, and do not copy a fare from a booking screen onto a blog. The Glenora ferry, from Adolphustown to Glenora near Lake on the Mountain, is the entry from the Kingston side. It is not the Toronto day.

Parking once you are in the county

Parking at the beach is the vehicle permit, not a street space in Picton. If the reservation site shows the day-use inventory full, the day is full. Do not plan to leave the car on a county road and walk in.

Town parking is a separate system. Visit the County puts the municipal supply at about 360 spaces: on-street pay-and-display, a lot on Market Lane, and limited spaces with no fee at 55 King Street and on Mary Street. Payment for the paid spaces goes through Passport. Details are on the county parking page. Those spaces do not replace a Sandbanks permit.

What fits in the day, and what does not

A coherent day is the park. Pick one beach, walk the dune trails Ontario Parks describes, and drive back. Stay on the trails the park marks. The dunes are habitat.

Ontario Parks lists two all-terrain wheelchairs among the facilities. That is a question for the park office at (613) 393-3319, not a promise that every trail is firm enough for a wheelchair or a stroller. Dog beaches are listed as two separate facilities. A dog on the swimming beach is a question for the park page that day.

Leave the rest for another visit. Lake on the Mountain and North Beach are different Ontario Parks sites. Destination Ontario describes the Millennium Trail as 46 kilometres for cycling, hiking, and birding. Visit the County says parts of that trail are temporarily closed and posts a detour map, so treat the trail as its own outing. Picton and Wellington have markets and main streets. A tasting day does not share an afternoon with a beach and the drive back to Toronto. Pick the beach or the towns.

For other days from the same city, use the Toronto day-trips guide. Elora and Stratford are the train-or-gorge alternatives. Hamilton's waterfalls are the escarpment day. The province hub is Ontario.

Season, cost, and access

The day-use season cited here is the 2026 range on Ontario Parks, 24 April through 26 October. Summer weekends are when the five-day reservation window matters. Weeks inside that range can still hit a capacity cap, which is why the tourism listing also points at the park's own updates. Cost is the vehicle permit, plus anything you add in town. Accessibility starts with the all-terrain wheelchairs and whatever the park office confirms for the beach you chose. Families with small children have a named option at Outlet Beach. Transit from Toronto does not finish the trip. The car does.

Questions travellers ask

Is this Prince Edward Island?
No. Prince Edward County is an Ontario municipality on Lake Ontario, between Toronto and Ottawa. Prince Edward Island is a different province.
Can I reach Sandbanks by train from Toronto?
Not to the gate. There is no train to 3004 County Road 12. VIA goes to Belleville, and County Transit describes weekday connections from there to Picton or Bloomfield. The park is still a car trip. A seasonal coach from Toronto listed for 2026 ended on 13 September.
Do I need a reservation for the beach?
A day-use vehicle permit is required for each vehicle. The Visit the County listing says you can reserve it up to five days ahead on the Ontario Parks reservation site or by phone. Camping and the two roofed houses are different bookings.
Can I add Picton and a winery on the same day?
That is more than this day. Sandbanks plus the towns plus tastings is an overnight. Pick the beach or the towns. Lake on the Mountain and North Beach are separate parks.
Is the park open all year?
Ontario Parks lists day use and camping for 2026 from 24 April to 26 October. Roofed accommodation is the product marked for winter. Check the park page if your date is outside that range. The facility-hours table was empty when this guide was checked.
